It is part of the region of the Costa del Sol and is the headquarters of the Association of Municipalities of the region; it is also the head of the judicial district that bears its name.

Marbella is famous for its internationally renowned and privileged climate.
The annual average temperature is around 18.5º C, with 320 days of sunshine a year.

Weather forecasts do not suggest any significant changes and the rain here does not usually exceed 50 days each year, December and January being the time of year with the highest precipitation.

This climate is due to its unique geographical situation, namely the mountains which surround Marbella, the Sierra Blanca and the Concha, visible from the entire area. Allied to the position of its coastal inlet, the effect is to shelter the town from the northern winds, allowing it to enjoy a special microclimate unique in the world and one which has become one of its great tourist attractions.

Marbella has centuries of history and different cultures which have left their traces throughout the municipality and particularly on the historic centre. There are substantial numbers of Roman, Arabic and Christian remains in the Old Town which have been magnificently preserved.

Main Areas

The Eastern sector of Marbella, which stretches from Río Real to Puerto de Cabopino, is the less urbanized area, has many sandy beaches, a broad range of beach restaurants or chiringuitos and a number of golf clubs in inland residential areas.

The Old Town has a unique appeal and a distinctively Andalusian character. Narrow streets and white pedestrian precincts lead to Plaza de Los Naranjos or Orange Square, where the town hall is located, and where there are many squares

This comprises the area from the end of the main road, Ricardo Soriano, to the entrance to Puerto Banús. Considered to be the luxury end of Marbella, its reputation began with the opening of the Marbella Club Hotel in the mid-1950s

Nueva Andalucía is virtually a residential town on its own. Also known as “Valle del Golf” or "Golf Valley" for its exclusive golf courses, it is a residential area for the most part, with beautiful detached houses

San Pedro de Alcántara is part of the municipality of Marbella, and one of the areas with the greatest growth and changes experienced in recent years. Its old town has a small town charm

Guadalmina is one of the prime residential developments in the western district of Marbella. Located just after San Pedro, it is divided into two areas but linked by its renowned golf course
